Doors, windows and shutters
Instead of a round marker on the wall, a door, window or shutter can show as a bar along its opening: you see at a glance what is open, without markers crowding the walls.
Draw an opening
- In Place devices, click the door or window sensor, or the shutter (a cover).
- In its card, 🪟 Opening on the plan → Draw it on the plan. A bar appears through the marker.
- Drag its two ends to where the opening starts and ends. They snap straight along the wall; hold Alt for any angle. The bar doesn't have to touch the marker: put the sensor where it really is and the bar on the window.
- Choose what it is: Door, Window or Shutter. Device Floorplan guesses from the device class and the name (shutter, roller, blind…); change it if it's wrong.
Press and hold the middle of the bar and drag to move the whole bar (pressing right on the marker still moves the marker). Remove the bar brings the marker back.
Two sensors, one opening
A window often has a contact sensor and a shutter. You draw the bar once:
- Put both sensors on the same spot (drop one onto the other and keep them separate, no need to bond). Draw the bar for one of them; the other gets a twin bar: the same length, a few pixels beside it, and it follows when you move or resize the bar.
- Switch side puts the twin on the other side: on top or below, or left or right of a vertical bar (for example window inside, shutter outside).
- Sensors in different places, like a window sensed from both sides, are paired with Next to… in the second sensor's card.
- Combine into one bar (a shutter and a contact of the same window): one bar instead of two, driven by the shutter, and daylight follows the shutter only. If the shutter says closed but the contact says open, the bar pulses orange-red.
- Draw its own bar gives a twin its own handles again.
- Bars you draw separately snap to each other's ends while you drag, so they line up.
On the card
| Open | Closed | |
|---|---|---|
| Door / window | Light blue bar | Nothing |
| Shutter with a contact (manual) | White outlined bar | Nothing; the room gets darker by day |
| Electric shutter (with a position) | White outline, filled as far as it's closed; the fill follows it while it moves | Full white, fading away after about 2 seconds; the room gets darker by day |
- Bars show in Live and Security. In Live the marker of a drawn opening steps aside: the bar is the signal. Tap a bar for its details and controls.
- Shutters without a bar show in Live only while they move; their position is in the popup and in the room's daylight.
- Daylight by day (needs room shapes): a window always lets daylight in, a shutter by how far it's open, a door doesn't count. A room with 3 of its 4 light sources closed is fairly dark; a room without any (a corridor, an entrance) takes the average of the rooms its shape touches or overlaps. Light doesn't pass a gap between shapes: that's a wall. To let a corridor share light with a bedroom, make the two shapes touch in the doorway. Card editor → Day & night → Closed shutters darken their room by day.
- A door and a shutter on the same opening each get their own bar.
A sensor that works the other way round
A contact that is closed when the door is open (or a doorbell that closes when it rings) is best turned around in Home Assistant: Settings → Devices & services → Helpers → Create helper → Template → Template binary sensor with this state:
{{ is_state('binary_sensor.your_sensor', 'off') }}Then put the helper on the plan; automations and history see it the right way too.
